The Same Gospel From The Beginning – Propitiation

John Carter – November 11, 2012 – Leviticus 16-17 – The Same Gospel From The Beginning
If I am a Believer Does my Life Reflect the Work of Christ? Propitiation

A Seven-Week Study Through Leviticus

It is these two chapters that the whole of Leviticus is pointing towards.

1. The Earthly High Priest makes Atonement for Himself and His Family

Leviticus 16:11

2. The High Priest Makes Atonement for the Peoples Sins, Tabernacle, and Altar

Leviticus 16:16

3. The Scapegoat Bearing Israel’s Sins is Removed Permanently

Leviticus 16:22

4. It is Finished

Leviticus 16:23

5. Blood

Leviticus 17:10-11, 14

1. The Earthly High Priest makes Atonement for Himself and His Family

The difference between the High Priest and Christ as our High Priest is that Christ is already perfect.

Focus Verse:

Leviticus 16:11

11 “Then Aaron shall offer the bull of the sin offering which is for himself and make atonement for himself and for his household, and he shall slaughter the bull of the sin offering which is for himself.

Application/Example:

A shadow is only a shadow and never to be confused with the real thing. Like a picture.

Hebrews 10:1

1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.

2. The High Priest Makes Atonement for the Peoples Sins, Tabernacle, and Altar

This is the work of Christ as our propitiation, done only once and forever.

Focus Verse:

Leviticus 16:16

16 He shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel and because of their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and thus he shall do for the tent of meeting which abides with them in the midst of their impurities.

Application/Example:

You are a sinner in need of redemption from the judgment of God.

Grudem

A sacrifice that bears  God’s wrath to the end and in so doing changes God’s wrath toward us into favor.

Hebrews 2:14-18

14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. 17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

3. The Scapegoat Bearing Israel’s Sins is Removed Permanently

The sins satisfied have been forever removed to never be heard from again.

Focus Verse:

Leviticus 16:22

22 The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a solitary land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

Application/Example:

No longer will we be haunted of our Past Sins

Psalm 103:12

12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

4. It is Finished

All that was left were the linen wrappings

Focus Verse:

Leviticus 16:23

23 “Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there.

Application/Example:

The Earthly work was done. Just like the High Priest Jesus had no further need of these garments.

Luke 24:12

12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.

John 20:5

and stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.

5. Blood

Focus Verse:

Leviticus 17:10-11, 14

10 ‘And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’

14 “For as for the life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.’

Application/Example:

Communion

Hebrews 9:22

22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

John 6:53

53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
