Mark Three: The Gospel

The Good News Is Not Simply That We Are Okay[1]

  • God doesn’t send innocent people to hell. However, there are no innocent people.
  • Things are much worse than we think they are
  • We are sinners in need of a savior.

The Good News Is Not Simply That God Is Love[2]

  • God’s character is not a one dimensional.
  • Love and wrath are both parts of God’ character. Along with holiness. (Heb. 12:14).

The Good News Is Not Simply That Jesus Wants To Be Our Friend[3]

  • Master/Lord
  • Enemy
  • Holy/Other
  • Propitiation – Substitutionary Atonement
  • Christ

The Good News Is Not Simply That God Will Renew Creation[4]

  • Misplaced peace
  • “We don’t do the gospel, we proclaim it.” (P.97)
  • It’s not about us, it’s about God. (P.97)

The Good New and Our Response[5]

  • A response is required. Apathy is a response.

Repentance and Belief[6]

  • Saving faith vs. mental ascent.
  • Right Thinking & Right Doing.
  • The Gospel is not an additive.

Conclusion[7]

  • Truth Claims – Either right or wrong – All or None
  • “To really hear the gospel is to change.” (P.103)

“The gospel is the heart of Christianity, and so it should be at the heart of our churches.”[8]

“A biblical understanding of the good news should inform every sermon, every act of baptism and communion, every song, every prayer, every conversation.”[9]

Gospel Basics[10]

  • “The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died on the cross as a sacrificial substitute for sinners and rose again, making a way for us to be reconciled to God.”[11]
  • Four Points Dever tries to cover when communicating the gospel[12]
    • God
    • Man
    • Christ
    • Response
  • Four Points I Try to Cover
    • Creation – God as Creator
    • Fall – We sinned against God
    • Redemption – God offers a way for us to be forgiven
    • Restoration – God will restore all things to himself

Gospel Overflow[13]

  • “When a church is healthy, and its members know and cherish the gospel above everything else, they will increasingly want to share it with the world.”[14]
